You’re welcome. Of late, the history books are saying that he didn’t die because he was refused a blood transfusion, but all of the years I was in school, we were told that the hospital would not admit him because he was Black, and that he died outside the hospital needing a transfusion.

A lesser known aspect of his work was mentoring and preparing Black doctors to be their absolute best. He advocated for access to equitable treatment for Black patients and actual representation for Black physicians in organizations like the A.M.A.

My mom was a kid when this happened and knew them. He was with four men and they had to drive all night and take turns driving. When it was Dr. Drew's turn, the rest were asleep, and then he fell asleep. He cracked his skull in the crash and the other doctors in the car knew they couldn't save him.

My teachers told me in elementary. Junior High and High School. They got it from books. A TV show told of the injustice and the irony of how he saved others, but he was refused a transfusion himself in the South.

I used to have my students do projects about Black inventors. One year 2 students who selected Dr. Drew and Dr. Daniel Hale decided to work together on the presentation portion. They wrote and performed a skit about open heart surgery and using blood bank blood. I was so proud of their learning!
