With science falling under increasing attack, this medical historian is here to remind people of the power of vaccines. THREAD👇

Also a major cause of British surrender at Yorktown (Yankees in the Continental Army started dying from it after the British had already surrendered).

Vaccines are, indeed, mind-blowing.
(I don't know the location or year)
I've had FOUR polio vacs over my life. Remarkably, I'm still alive... Thank you those who made it 👍
No I am not blaming the industry. Vaccines are a much needed thing.
What I am saying is that misinformation undermines trust, which created the anti-vax movement
Cheers! 😊
Industrial scale antivax disinformation propaganda hasn't helped, of course.
I fully expect more developed and sensible nations will start closing their borders to US citizens. That and this has the potential to impact global herd immunity
Because stupid people exist en masse.
Vaccines are one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs of all time.
At school, in Australia, we read Alan Marshall's wonderful autobiography "I Can Jump Puddles", documenting his life experience of having contracted polio as a young lad.
Thanks to anti vaxers, there may be another young person, soon, who can also document their experience with polio. :(
I was terrified by the wards of people in iron lungs.
The anti vax folk don’t, generally , remember the world of polio , diphtheria , measles etc 😡
Anyone who was a child in the 50s & 60s , should remember the scourge of these diseases … & TB the disease of poverty , is on the rise 😡
But the fun thing is, even some 30-odd or 40-odd years after you get chickenpox the first time?
HAVE FUN WITH THE SHINGLES.
I got the shingles YEARS before it's normally offered (normally shingles shots start age 50).

Danish anaesthetist Bjørn Aage Ibsen created the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) during the polio epidemic in the 1950's
Despite initial scepticism, mortality rates dropped from 87% to 15%

Standing in line at school w/ my family
And my great grandmother had polio as an adult. Her husband divorced her in the 1930's. Because of her disability. Before No-Fault was a thing.
#Vacina
I remember meeting friends of my parents who had survived polio as youngsters.
I can’t understand people, communities, who think any vaccine is bad.
Take care. Stay chill. 💙💙💙
She was in bed for 2 years. Couldn’t walk. Thankfully she survived and walked again. Dayton OH

I am still thankful
People FORGET, we had NO IDEA in the early days
That was true Public Health
He still cops vitriol 😔
Watching the world, and its HCW, was 💔
Still is TBH ❤️🩹😔
I had a milder variant of the polio virus at age 7, but even that left me unable to walk for months.
This virus is so horrible. I used to visit people in hospital in iron lungs because of polio.
Vaccinations eliminated it in North America. I can’t believe people would play around.
You should still get your Covid vaccine. That said, if you do not leave the house and no one visits you, well, then diseases that require contact are not an issue.
a) Live
b) Enjoy his well earned retirement
That poor poor pharmacy never saw what hit them in the candy aisle....
He also got mumps, though, & ended up having no children.
He would have been a great dad.
The best moms & dads I’ve known didn’t have a biological connection to the kids they helped raise. The strongest connection was love.
But this time everyone will be needing an iron lung instead of a ventilator.
Thanks, party of “pro life”.
