The prosodic hierarchy describes that different levels of linguistic structure are nested (syllables are grouped into feet, which are grouped into intonation phrases) and there is evidence that it plays a role for how we comprehend sentences etc. ⬇️

With regressions and machine learning analyses, we could show that the acoustic information associated with the prosodic hierarchy top–down modulates cortical entrainment — the structure of intonation phrases influenced tracking of feet and the structure of feet influenced syllable tracking. ⬇️

That’s an interesting question! We didn’t look at this aspect but it would well be worth further exploring individual variation of the implementation of the prosodic hierarchy.

These results — interfacing acoustics, phonology, and neurophysiology — show that the prosodic hierarchy plays a central role for how the brain can form coherent prosodic units during the comprehension of a continuous speech stream.

Very interesting. Could this explain why phonotactically harmonious loanwords get absorbed into a language better (they inflect and derive as if they were native) than others? Tamil has a loanword villan that sounds native (in fact has a native homophone) and absorbed better than "scan".
