I work in marketing / tech and the main reason Twitter added it is likely the ADA Legislation that requires any public business to make sure their site is accessible. Beginning in 2020ish, a lot of businesses started getting hit with lawsuits for their site not meeting Web Accessibility requirements

I’m not saying that alt text isn’t ever used by those tools or that it isn’t part of the reason. I’m also not saying alt text is pointless. But, from my experience - the web accessibility and alt text push has mostly been building as those lawsuits and guidelines have increased.

I was just providing context, that alt text didn’t become a huge thing recently because of AI. It was several years before that due to gov regulation. I hate the government and my industry. Like I’m just trying to join the conversation. 🥴
