They wanted to humiliate Zelensky.

Vance made it very clear that he wanted Zelenskyy to thank Trump, personally, during this visit. They wanted a public genuflection. The reality is that they have always intended to pull UKR aid, and found a cheap excuse that let them blame Zelenskyy and delight Putin. The US is now a vassal state.
