Anyone here running a home lab or home server? Thinking of getting one setup to run some services for myself and to serve as a backup server. Thinking Plex, PiHole, etc. Tried a Pi before but without a GPU, transcoding was horrid / non-existent. - ThreadSky

I got a 10 year old Synology NAS and a Raspberry Pi that runs Pi-Hole for the network. Everything connected through Tailscale, so I can access and everything from anywhere.

Plex encoding still runs smoothly for the 1080p ripped movies. Struggles with the 4k content though.

I still would like to move Pi-Hole to the cloud and host in on a cheap VM through Docker. And only apply the Pi-Hole blocking to the Tailscale network.

The new Mac Mini actually sounds like an insane home server for $599, but the storage upgrades are mad expensive and it'll look nasty if I connect a external drive enclosure.

Consider looking at Jellyfin instead of Plex! Plex has slowly become bloatware over the years.

I've found that the Jellyfin clients for TVs etc are pretty crap though 🫠

Hmm, fair. I’m using SwiftFin (native Jellyfin client for Apple devices) but have also used Infuse in the past. Was pretty good!
