Yes and no? Watchmen takes the genre and kind of turns it upside down a bit, so familiarity is good to understand that aspect of it. But going in fresh is sounds like it may be an interesting journey in itself.

I thought the story was good, the concepts were fantastic & the character development was very interesting. But not knowing what the conventions were (that were being turned upside down) meant that I was often lost - or had a superficial understanding that I was missing something (not knowing what)
Ooohhh I am resisting the urge to take you the Comics Rabbit Hole, which is not just a hole, more of a infinite woodchuck warren of endless tunnels interconnecting and weaving everywhere.
Like I won't write an essay on how Rorschach was a combo of Steve Ditko's characters Mr.A and The Question and how Moore created Rorschach as a parody of both of them to make fun/criticize Ditko's fondness of Objectivism oh wait I better stop now lol.
Yeah, see those are the references I'm missing. Rorschach just reminded me of a certain kind of Super-Logical Right Wing Comics Guy, without knowing who it was satirising
