Not surprising legacy media like the NYT is trying to discourage people from going to the competition.
Musk and Zuckerberg's fascist turn might well be the end for the likes of the NYT as the death of Facebook will lead to the emergence of oligarch media alternatives.
How would the death of Facebook hurt legacy media? Wouldn't they be able to advertise based on their own content (as they did in the pre-internet era) and without Facebook or Google grabbing their slice?
I don't think it will. What I think is in progress here is that as people get utterly disgusted by Fascistbook and Twitter, they are going to build new places that suit them and those will create alternatives to the NYT, WaPo etc. as well and those titles are much sicker than Facebook, etc.
