It's easy to use Eliade's work because it's there - it's largely accessible for people. He's not a niche writer regarding Religious Studies or Theory, but a behemoth that has influenced the framework of the study of religion, so it's easy to find commentary on him in addition to using his work. 2/-

I generally and more or less strictly used Eliade's theoretical work myself, esp. between 2013-2019, to inform my Heathen cosmological and sacrally mechanical needs. I still do, largely, and would probably consider myself "quasi-Eliadean" at this moment. Why? 3/-

I believe that there's a fundamental disconnect in the "starting" point between what is Sacred to Eliade, and what can be extrapolated from Heathen "lore". I draw heavily on Bauschatz for this one, from "The Well and the Tree". I am aware that this book is more important to American Heathens. 4/-

Eliade's ritual mechanics hinge on suspending "profane time" and creating the conditions of sacrality which can encourage the manifestation of the numinous divine. Through such enactment, profane time is suspended to "reach back" to the First Time, an unpolluted concept where the numinous is 5/-

This is the "Eternal return", that ritualistic enactment actively participates in hierophany/manifestation. This is Eliade's major contribution. For completeness sake, it should be noted that Durkheim was the originator of the idea of a sacred-profane dichotomy in Western (sociological) thought. 6/-

The problem with Eliade-in-a-Heathen-framework is that Eliade's treatment of the linearity of history is fundamentally incongruous with postulated ideas of Wyrd (again from Bauschatz). Eliade's "terror of history" views no intrinsic value to history, only to mythological/cosmogonic age. 7/-
