I always wondered how people in the US manage with a healthcare system which is splintered into bots, privatised, expensive and full of holes. US immigrants often think it's cheap in Costa Rica even if they pay for private doctors.
Would never swap any European health care for the US

Most of us don't. I just got a bill for a preventive wellness check - it consisted of listening to my heart, a small chat, feeling around - not anything of real substance - $508. I was told my cholesterol was off and the only guidance I was given was to exercise and eat better. /1

WHAT? 500 € for a routine preventive check?! That is free at certain intervals in the European systems I lived in. And the bill is 70 € till you get it back. Health cover is for all and paid 50/50 by the company and employee. Unemployed and kids and pensioners are also covered.

The assumption being I was doing neither. I was sent on my way - this is healthcare. When I had standard insurance, I couldn't afford to use it - the initial full boat I had to pay was out of my means. I had to tell my employer I couldn't afford to work there. /2

They recommended I go to a specific type of plan which I ended up doing because there wasn't much of any other option. I had to just hope nothing major happened like an ER visit or an accident. It sucks and it's worse now. /end
