okkk so this is some crazy af rendering. I thought it was a 3d model at first. What were your layers like? did you put the patterns on their own layer and shade the rest like a sphere? XD???

At first I separated the parts into simple section masks so I can render each simple shapes on its own before merging them together and do the overall painting
Then after the basic greyscale render is done I do an overpaint for the rest of the piece!
NICE! Yea, it’s way more convenient to do shading in greyscale sometimes because you can really focus in on the values before anything else. You manage to make the colors look really good too sometimes with that workflow it ends up muddy 🥲🥲 but ur too goated i guess 🙄🙄🙄😆
That’s an awesome process! Lately I’ve been getting into raw painting in color with no layers. It can be kinda tough at times but it’s helped me in learning the arcane style
If you're trying to hands on painting it definitely can be a little tricky haha I myself prefer doing greyscale as my base before actually painting later:"D

Use WHITE as the base and the values under those for the base shadows and ambient occlusion
Then you can add light and polish after
