One of the most important books I've ever read. It was on my history degree syllabus.

It should be on every history syllabus.

Should also say that it's an exceptionally easy and fascinating read. It's a 'page turner', if that isn't too flippant a term for such dark events.

Quite. It's also a love story, and an amazingly vivid account of the life of a young man in the last days of the Weimar Republic.
