Why don’t they build sub 1k sq ft homes anymore? Simple. No one wants them.

Countertops? Get me that quartz or granite. Appliances? Stainless. Carpets? Try hardwoods. Vinyl in the bathroom? No, I need tile.

That's clearly not meeting a major need of the market, and yet the big money and the builders are pretty unlikely to take tracts of land and cover them with 1952-style ranches that'll sell for 1/3 as much.

We bought a 1200 sq ft house (built 40 years ago) and for 2 people and a few cats it's been the perfect size. Easy/fast to clean and cheap to heat/cool. It's a shame you can't buy a new-ish detached home in the 1200-1500 range these days.

I'm super annoyed with the current state of the real estate market, but "suffering" in a house with 4 bedrooms and 2 kids, while I grew up in a 3 bedroom house with 4 people. We have it so good today, but we don't know it.

If things do free up I'll move to get a better mudroom (not joking)

Where I live I’ve seen a bunch of people converting them to rentals that rent by the room. It’s a more efficient use of the property but of course it crowds neighborhoods with a lot of cars and a lot of people aren’t happy.
