Yeah but who ever had to install windows to begin with? It either comes preinstalled or it's already installed when you get to work. People don't use windows because they like the OS, it's nearly always about specific software. Updates are ridiculous bullshit though I'll give you that - ThreadSky

I remember the days when updates were individual kb notices. If there were an issue with, say, a printer update, you could just roll back that one kb. Now it’s all or nothing, accept the issue or leave yourself vulnerable.
The one good thing about cumulative updates is making an old system current

I'll give you that. Most people swim into that fish trap and the real trouble with drivers, malware, lost data endless updates etc. etc. comes later.

I think that's a assumption we Linux users make a lot. We love the configurability, the freedom, the choices we can make and we struggled through the learning process. It's incredible hard for someone outside of the cosmos to see how beautiful the Linux world is because it is surrounded

People don't want to understand why Y is not working or how X works. They want a preinstalled OS that is ready to go. In some way they dont want configurability.

People don't even want to pick desktop/window manager to use before they download the install image. Linux does have a lot of choices but you're either taking time to learn and make an informed choice, or happier without even being asked and given either because you're not interested in the workflow

just the end of the process i.e if people just want to browse the web, do some office-type work choices are daunting distractions that put new users off.

Personally I think it's a shame because I love to understand what I'm doing. But I learned that I can't assume this for everyone else. Every OS has a place somewhere. But only Linux has a place in my private life. :D
