Once upon a time I fantasized of being a journo. Realised a long time go it was just as well I didn't. I couldn't have done it. I was asked to behave unethically too often as it was.

Those with the luxury of choosing between morals and paying the mortgage are minted already, unfortunately. Just about everyone I knew was just seeking to earn a crust.
Very few if any of the Telegraph "journalists" will starve if they don't toe the corporate line on writing absolute unmitigated bollocks. They could afford integrity if they wanted to, but they've chosen not to.
Your average jobbing hack at the Bristol Bugle or the Doncaster Daily might not be able to resist demands from Reach HQ to write whatever they can to bring down the local council, but Alllister Heath, Allllison Pearson and their ilk push this garbage because they want to.
I lived that dream. Gave it seven years and that was plenty. However, I still have respect for those that continue to pursue it. Horrible job, mostly. Most I know still in the game don't agree with the shite they're expected to produce.
I suspected that you were talking from personal experience. The only compromise I can offer from my perspective is that maybe one can distinguish between the individual and the 'profession'? Once any profession is that compromised it can no longer really call itself a profession.
Oh, it's absolutely true. There are surprisingly few right wing zealots working in the business in my experience. I'm going back a bit now but most people I worked with just needed a job. There was only one who's still at the Mail actually believed the pish they were writing.
