Commander is def one of those things that you need to find like-minded players to play with and then only play with those people.
I barely play anymore so I stopped building decks. So these days when I play I always borrow a deck since that way I'm guaranteed to match the power level of the table.
Yeah, getting a good commander group is more akin to getting like a good D&D group than playing a competitive game. It's not enough to be friends, you have to be on a similar wavelength.
Yeah there's a reason my friend has a deck he never plays with friends (Uril, the Mistwalker) because it's literally unfuckwithable once it gets a remotely ok start. You gotta play with friends who just make fun, but strong, decks, rather than people who just want strong, MAYBE fun, decks.
Yeah regardless of power levels and whatever else the most important piece for commander is everyone being on the same page/table chemistry and that's really tough to find. I just play 3 or 4 times a year with the same group and we all know how to act. Without them idk if I'd touch it tbh
Its hard to get Commander "right", it involves alot of friction, getting to know well your "pod" and building a good deck that allows you to play as hard as you want and still allow the pod to have a good experience.
I balance the game experience in the deck construction, never at my play decisions.
