If it's not one universal color then it defeats the purpose unfortunately, and the color started as a 'same hue as the environment' to avoid color issues by just making them bright/saturated on the "brown everywhere" games of the day.
Unless you have something that's complimentary to the dominant colours of the level, but that breaks apart if you've got a changing weather or time of day system
Me when people keep fucking talking about yellow paint in video games regardless of the fact that the developers probably did playtesting and found that players got confused about where to go and needed some amount of guidance in those areas
