many refuse to see the connection between their votes and these policies. When confronted with the consequences of being uninformed, their response is often: “Don’t tell us that—it’s God’s will.”
As someone who understands the political and economic conditions they fled, it’s frustrating to see them use faith as an escape from accountability. They recognize injustice when it happens elsewhere, but not when it happens here.
I’ve come to realize that the trauma they experienced in their home countries may have been so profound that it’s all they know, and perhaps it’s all they feel capable of handling. Hope and courage might feel so unfamiliar and overwhelming that they struggle to believe in them.
