Higher altitudes, so the conventional wisdom goes, means better snowfall.
But snow can no longer be taken for granted, even at Gulmarg.
Slopes usually covered in 2 metres of snow were bare and deserted.
For winter sports enthusiasts, trips were cancelled in disappointment.
But for locals dependent on tourism, this was an economic crisis.
Nearly 2 billion people directly depend on its glaciers as a water source, both for drinking and agriculture.
It should serve as a wake up call for winter sports bodies still promoting polluting industries.
