A new national armaments director will be responsible for a £20bn budget to “build & sustain our national arsenal, because at this time, we must rearm Britain”. That person will be responsible for the UK’s defence industrial strategy

The Deceased UK Steel Industry
I think none of that money should be spent on 🇺🇸 armaments given it can no longer be considered an ally - indeed an aggressor -given Trump’s threats plus the way we have seen the USA constrain use in Ukraine.
The Defence Minister, John Healey, also announced an end to the Levene Reforms, introduced by the Tories in 2012, arguing they “produced too much duplication, too much waste”.
That 2.5% GDP commitment to defence spending is not going to be nearly enough.
Most of Europe is clear we will be at war with Russia in less than 3 years
A poor peace will guarantee it
However we are now getting beyond "efficiencies"
We have not provided the weapons required for the last 3 yrs & will now have to live with the consequences - defense budgets at 3-4%+
It was give Ukraine a £1 would save £10 - we did not.
Short term savings now = long term pain
For 🇬🇧 that will take "only" an add'l £5BN
If 🇮🇹 & 🇪🇸 double their 1.3% to 2.5% that adds €50BN to defence
🇦🇹 & 🇮🇪 need to join NATO!
There's also the question of leadership in 🇪🇺, recognising the nature of the hybrid war, and rapid consolidation of 🇪🇺 defence industry
🇬🇧 politics interesting given that most Reform voters support Putin & Trump
It is true a majority support Trump. But 40% don’t And I wonder how that level of favourability will stick as the inevitable chaos and failure unfolds. Not well I suspect”
