On this reading, the development of logic is absolutely necessary, but its function is not to provide an ontological key to the deep structure of the world, but rather to arm us with a dialectical capacity, with the 'tools' (yes Hegel ridiculed the whole idea of methods as tools)

to judge things from the perspective of speculative totality. It is in this light that we can comprehend Hegel's famous dialogue with Goethe, written down by Eckermann, in which Hegel says sth like the dialectic is the inherent spirit of contradiction etc. etc.

Once we are there, once we interiorize the 'system', we can become better critics, because we see every particular thing as a moment of a speculative whole -- which is, of course, a critical enterprise.
