Miniature books were primarily a novelty which became hugely popular in the 19th century! (This little guy was printed in 1896.) Having said that, this book is still remarkably tiny compared to other miniatures that were sold at the time.

Thank you! What a delightful answer. I'm now imagining a whole group of intellectual mice swaggering round in top hats and tails, gleefully sharing their latest tiny bookshop purchase.
Sadly not... he dwells in a nest of tissue paper inside a small tin (visible in the background of a couple of the photos). Looks very cosy, if you're a tiny book!
