The most helpful thing I can say to my UK trans friends is KNOW YOUR RIGHTS under GDPR around the processing of special category data - if they come at you w/the 'P11 Schedule 1 of DPA: protection of the public' reason for handling it, ask them to lay out exactly WHY it falls under that reasoning

GDPR can be a very valuable and costly (to companies, corporations etc.) weapon. Read up as best you can so you can use it well. I'm not a lawyer but I do this for a living and the ICO are happy to fuck people with it.

Under article 9 of GDPR, birth certificates for trans individuals could counted as Special Category Data and the ICO *will* come for you on that front

I was wondering whether 'asking to see a birth certificate' counts as 'processing', but as it would be pointless to see the certificate without recording the fact that you have (even without taking a copy) I think it probably would.

Apart from the fact that anyone can get a certified copy of any birth certificate, which means that birth certificates have zero use as a form of ID. If I showed my great-grandmother's certificate would they accept it?

Honestly this law is so patently stupid I cannot even 😅 we only usually accept birth certificates as proof of parental responsibility where I work, unless you provide proof of address & any name changes to back it up! Are they going to hold all that data too!???

Basically all a birth certificate proves is that a birth was registered with a particular set of details. I'm pretty sure that it doesn't even prove that the birth actually occurred! The parent/s have to prove identity (these days), but I suspect that didn't apply some decades ago.
