The old dnd editions really had an oversized cultural impact compared to player count. Satanic panic etc.
but if we're talking about players per year, or concurrent active players, it's gotta be 10-20x higher now than it's ever been
While there are still comic shops with a table for ttrpgs, now there are also bars that have a gaming focus and events.
Bc I would guess they know - for most current players it's literally the first one they've ever experienced
