We have a huge shortage of fixed wing pilots and aircraft technicians which was highlighted as far back as 2019.
There no-one to fly the bloody jets, or keep them airworthy.

I suppose the thinking is that jets are faster than boats and can patrol a bigger area. Deterrence only,not meant to be used. I mean, if we get into a shooting war, a few jets won't save us, but they might stop it getting to that stage.

It can cost millions to train one fighter pilot. Then there training the technicians.

To keep a fighter jet in the air for an hour is around €30k.

We'd be better off arming the fishermen in Castletownbere.

Fast fighter (or interceptor) jets aren’t used for ‘patrolling’, though. There’s a reason the propeller-driven CASAs are in use for our maritime surveillance - they go slow, are relatively cheap to run, and can stay up for an extended amount of time.
