I held onto friends for years who were very much the first type (with both art and just general advice), because I thought they "cared enough to be honest" or "they just have high standards, if I work hard enough I'll impress them, " or something. In reality, I was putting myself through abuse.

I'd like to think that I'm a good beta reader but I've one too many times just rewritten whole ass chapters because I somehow became their editors on top of that.

THIS! My friend is a writer and I love reading, so when he shared his draft for a sci-fi anthology entry, I was touched he valued my feedback. Ain't no way I'm gonna give him a half-assed critique!
