The thing I really don't understand is how all the billionaires currently running our lives are such absolute joyless losers with such fragile masculinity?

Sadly power not only corrupts but also buys you an echo chamber wherein common sense no longer exists and literally rewires your brain. Not to mention good people don't tend to become billionaires (or politicians π).
I don't know that someone who isn't an absolute loser can get to be a billionaire - or at least it's relatively rare (Mark Cuban?)
You generally have to be incredibly driven, ruthless, and greedy. Happy, emotionally intact people are rarely those things in the right combination.
They want so desperately to be seen as cool by shitposting boys that these grown ass dudes are making complete idiots of themselves. Someone noted that with less wealth disparity the Medici family helped bankroll the renaissance and, really, what great art or beauty have any of them inspired?
My take, and this isn't an excuse: this is the first gen of wealth that is experiencing feedback/disdain in real time thanks to being terminally online. They expected that the money and power would come with 100% fealty and are now angry at us for seeing them as they are.
I think desire for power and external validation fills up the parts of them that most people fill with connection to nature, joy, interests, spirituality, compassion for others, hope for the future, humanity. Drive and creativity without caring who you mow down is deadly.

But when one of these jerks gets so much money that itβs difficult to level up because they have everything, they get the sadz.
Just my opinion, of course.
