Saying "fuck the past" when discussing issues like patriarchy, racism, and misogyny is problematic as it oversimplifies the complex, deeply rooted historical structures that are present today.
These systems didn’t appear overnight; they were built over centuries and are still pervasive today.
Wrestling saved me from depression. It’s been there for hundreds of thousands, if not millions when they needed to escape most bc there are no seasons. WWE gutted all of us by degenerating into one of the most disgusting companies to ever exist. Those of us that are anti MAGA need this escape.
The idea of ‘wrestling’ as a vehicle for change seems a bit contradictory, especially when the broader culture around it can still be so entrenched in toxic behaviors, like misogyny, racism, or homophobia.
I am glad you are doing better these days. Thanks for sharing your story and all the best!
If you look into the history of pro wrestling the toxicity in which you say it’s entrenched is due to Vince McMahon. He ran the territories out of business and aired on NBC and ppv. It became global and he shaped how the world understood pro wrestling.
He created a monopoly to the point most ppl have no idea other wrestling exists. AEW is only 6 years old but the goal is to be a true challenger brand and alternative. They are redefining the pro wrestling culture by empowering women, POC and LGBTQ+ talent. Supporting them counters WWE’s toxicity.
Yes, and hundreds of LGBTQ+ performers have worked for decades to make wrestling a more inclusive place for fans and performers alike to fight against those historical structures.
But you feel free to stop by Effy’s Big Gay Brunch next month and tell them that they’re wrong.
