Both. Lots of forgotten IP could revisited with great success, and we've seen it happen with several franchises, but this is a largely untouched gold mine. Yet, we still need fresh ideas in the industry. A healthy balance is what we actually need. It's not a zero-sum proposition.

I want a mix. There's lots of great IP languishing that could be ported to phones or tablets without putting high demands on the devices. A few full remakes with modern design ideas can be very fun.

But there's gotta be new IP outside the Indie Space that isn't chasing trends a decade old.

If they have the resources to properly do it then I don’t see a problem with them bringing them back. But usually it’s done on the cheap and it hurts the brand.

I think the big thing here is whether it's just a shameless cash grab or trying to bring back an old fave that would do as well or better in the modern gaming scene. One of my dream games is Onimusha with a modern soulslike combat system + controls.

I love when franchises are revived, but only if it is through love and not for a cash grab.

When deciding to bring back an old franchise, bring it back because of it's specialties. Unique mechanics/design or any other reason making even the originals still worth playing today. Not just for it's name. And sometimes new engine technology can realize/improve upon the original intended vision.

While I do want new concepts and new IP, I think it would be a tragedy if publishers just purchased a ton of IP we love and never considered making new games with them. Some dead franchises can be left alone though - I'm not sure Duke Nukem needs another sequel, for example. 😬

It should be determined by whether that franchise was a successful one or not. Don't mess with success. But if something failed to live up to expectations and they're inspired to change that, I say go for it.

It depends on the execution, goals, franchise, and message.

If the dead franchise hasn’t seen a new entry in at least a decade then sure go for it. It’ll be new for some people. Otherwise yes move on to something new.

Both of course, but I think the biggest thing is bringing back old franchises with a purpose. Don't bring it back to just remake every game and do nothing new, but like, I'd welcome a new Sly Cooper for example with the characters we love, but fresh new ideas to go with it
