Gaming question of the day.
What is your opinion on video game preservation?
(Should old games be preserved for history so they are never forgotten, or do you think by preserving old games it will cause players to only play old games and not buy new games?)

A LOT of games feature characters from other, older games, and losing that piece of video game history makes parts of modern games irrelevant.
And also, Castlevania, Contra, Zelda and Mario need to remember where they came from.
I think it would be silly to destroy old games just to keep people from continuing to play them. That would be like destroying old books to make way for new books.
Is Call of Duty suffering because people are still playing Berserk on Atari 2600?
I have nostalgia and want to revisit games that I loved or even that I never finished and want to conquer!
I love new games too! It doesn’t affect my desire for new games, I will also always want new games too!
All the gamers I know do play new age games despite their oldies being available though so I think it depends on the gamer ☺️
But physical preservation isn’t enough. Phys media degrades and doesn’t stay compatible w subsequent gens of new tech, even if you keep porting the games -
Digital libraries to preserve code. Digital versions of games to provide future proof access
But to make it happen we need better digital consumer rights. What’s ownership vs licensing? Can access expire? Who maintains servers & how, etc
Preservation doesn't compete with development.
Mainly I would like people to look back at the games that were made and understand how/why they worked, without being blocked in any way (looking at you "live services")
Just because I have access to original Legend of Zelda doesn't mean I won't play new LoZ unless it's not a good game (just the first example came to mind)
It's a good way to show how far we've advanced and in some cases how far we've fallen. I certainly have no doubt that some will find that "they don't make them how they used to" but even that's not a bad thing, I'd hope it would inspire the next generation
The former is easy. Play the 1st Resident Evil and marvel at how clean and polished RE8 is.
Play say, NFL 2k5 and realize good GOD this is so much better than current Madden and demand better from the industry
Gaming is an expensive hobby, especially today, and older games are (usually) cheaper and easier to access.
