I realized this awhile ago w white liberals trying to be progressive. If you don't know the truth behind various disparities, even if you assume we are "born equal," your rationalization for a disparity, if false, will still bolster those you are trying to fight.

I think what is important is accuracy. There is a historical tendency among Americans to exaggerate or sensationalize the Holocaust, both as it affected Jews (see the opening scene of Hunters) and non-Jews (e.g. the gay rights movement in the 70s), which is ultimately harmful to Holocaust memory.
