I taught students who had been kicked out of the traditional high schools in the Detroit area. One day I took them for a nature walk next-door to our school. We were surrounded by woods. Cornfields. And a lot of trash.

Most of my students had never been in nature much. They never so much of a reason to go anywhere that involved nature. Then one of my students ran up to me with a tiny tree frog. They were enraptured. I found a small fishbowl for it.
They insisted on drawing beautiful palm trees, clouds, and an island for it on the side of the bowl. Every day I brought in life crickets for the frog to eat that I got from a local pet store. This became a very big experience for the kids. They would stand around as I fed the frog crickets.
And then one day I came into class and the window was open and the fishbowl was tipped on its side. There was no frog. Someone had decided it was time for the frog to be free. I couldn't really argue. Some students were upset, but we all agreed that it was time for the frog to return to the woods.
