“You’re not investigating; you’re a glorified janitor sweeping up digital crumbs”… ouch. But yes. I’m curious, what’s the biggest gap you see as far as college graduates with degrees coming out unprepared. What’s one thing you would change if you could besides selling the job shortage hype?

Make sure professors use up to date textbooks and white papers. Textbooks printed are difficult because most are outdated by the time they are published.

Emphasis on report writing. However, if you never worked in the field you would not know this.

Hands on activity. Open source vs proprietary.

Those are key points. I know the feeling of sitting in a class, using an outdated textbook, with software demos in the book that wasn't even used anymore.

I've also sat in classes where we replicated what someone just posted in a blog...like, hot off the press.

Two totally different experiences.

Today's minimum standards are, by default, already a BS in a CS-related field and an MS in DF/IR. We must stop selling the BS "cyber" degrees as the standard to get hired. A BS should be acceptable, but it's not.
