On the other hand, the UK is as unlikely to do anything useful with this as they were before, it's not as if a good deal of the tree planting (& natural rewilding) needed isn't already blatantly obvious as to where it needs to be...

As a cyclist I've noticed rows of trees along country lanes being cut down. They can't all be ash. Over the past 5 years it's got really bad. None of them are ever replanted. Just in my patch of the country I reckon we've lost about 500 trees that used to grow out of hedges & line country lanes.

Depending where, either farmers or the council are liable for any costs if they fall over, this is a problem (was the excuse for the Sheffield destruction)... Insurance law & the (associated) frivolous claims culture drive this, it doesn't happen in the Netherlands where I now live (other things do)

The French have been doing something similar for some years- counting the trees & increasing their number annually. Bring it on Britain.
