Considering how many First Nations and Indigenous people have spoken, written, argued, and tried to socialize this request to respect their culture, acknowledge the history of literally murdering them for their religion, etc. I feel pretty comfy reminding folks about the term's use by non-Natives.

No I wasn't, just in the general sense. Because English is always changing too. And I'm reminded of those examples of when wearing traditional garb is offensive (Native American is a good example) vs. when it's embraced by locals (like tourists donning Japanese kimonos).

so true about language. the kimono thing is an interesting example because it really highlights the differences between being Japanese and being Japanese American. The diaspora has very different experiences and things like anti-Asian racism impacts Japanese differently than Japanese Americans.
