It is not a trap. It would be a genuine step in the right direction. Of course it is very limited, but the reason it is not that the EU would not want full FoM - it does - but that even this very limited proposal is too much for the UK.

If you want something better than this, then you have to tell the UK government. They are blocking it, not the EU.

That’s exactly my point.

We have to tell UK gov that we want mobility for everyone

…and that we are not afraid of Freedom of Movement of people

We need to be telling them that we don’t think young people should have to apply for visas at all.

We already have visas for all ages.

2. Who’d have thought that 4 years after having our Freedom of Movement taken away we’d be begging for them to introduce… yes… a new visa scheme.

3. In many EU countries young Brits can already use existing visas and it’s unclear to me what benefit this new youth mobility scheme would actually bring, unless it’s not a visa scheme at all and is essentially a visa-waiver (exemption) instead.

Absolutely, yes. But only if it is delivered using visa waivers (exemptions).

6. But I’d also like to see a plan for what happens when people turn 30 or marry someone over 30.

My feeling is that the age threshold needs to be increased from 30 to 150.

After all, we’re all young at heart, aren’t we?
