generally I'd be very curious to see a trip composition graph over decades, bc you'll often come across testimony to the effect of "TV is killing off-peak traffic" or similar
I'm not a New Yorker but I do wonder how often people actually go to destination retail places, what fraction of total number of trips or per person trip miles is that kind of trip.
At least in Boston, I mostly try to buy within my neighborhood at walkable stores, as well as supermarkets which are on my car commute route. I buy clothes at a rotation of thrift stores. I actually don't necessarily think super peaky retail concentration is very good
Shopper specials still exist in the weekends leading up to Christmas and the days between Christmas and New Years on NJT and Metro-North. They extend peak service in the morning until 11 or so.
