Not to sound like an aging millennial, but binge watching has ruined an entire generations ability to digest and think critically about their media and the way story progression unfolds.

Hmmm. Everything I've binged was broadcast with 1/4 of the time consumed by ads. That was better? Binging a show is just like reading a book nonstop. Sure, you could read a chapter a week, but what if you're forced to, and have to read tons of ads to go on?
While there are additional factors at play with the general lack of media comprehension, I do agree that bingeing makes it harder to fully take in & retain information that might be important later on.
That's why when I watch a series for the first time, I'll watch 1 or 2 episodes in one sitting. I only binge when I'm already familiar with the story & comfortable enough to wanna put it on in the background while working on art or something.
Frankly I think the 90s media stuff was the stuff that wore out our taste for nuance, we absorbed so much crap TV then it's like "just give me the simple thing please!!!"
Respectfully disagree. Either someone comprehends media or doesn't. The difference was back in the day internet wasn't so popular so people weren't nonsense-arguing like they do now.
i agree but at the same time I'm SO used to binging stuff mindlessly that i feel like im part of the problem sometimes. at the same time, when i really, deeply invest myself into something, i usually end up crying
Honestly? Yeah. Trying to explain how things used to be to my kids (who are impatient and entitled bc of streaming if I'm honest) gives me new gray hairs every time.
They can't handle stories that release on a schedule rather than drop all at once--if they don't get clarifying information before the episode is over they often blame it on bad writing instead of using their noodle and assuming the plot point will be addressed in an episode that hasn't aired yet
I think i got that as soon as I posted the question 😭
First thought it meant that simply watching the show all at once was bad for retaining media knowledge 😂 not that audiences new bad patience expects immediate results which takes away the build up and impact of a shows eventual plot point dkwjl

But FOMO 😔
I don't think it's the only thing at fault, but its definitely contributed
