What takes so long to prepare the vehicles? 20 in six months is ~3/mo. Seems like they could build new ones at that rate…

I don't know to be honest, but they surely will have a reason for this, as the previous Marder 1A3 IFV deliveries were carried out much faster. Also, please don't forget that the Marder 1A3 IFVs receive an upgrade before they are being delivered to Ukraine, which, of course, also takes some time.

Or I could be confused and the long delivery time is because of the irregularity of the signing of the contracts. If there was a contract for, say, 1,000 IFVs, they could be pumped out in high volume, just with a long lead time for the first batch.

The Marder is not produced anymore at all. Since 2015, the system has been gradually replaced by the Puma.

I know.
I was making two points: the lead time to upgrade the Marders to the 1A3 variant is so long that it seems that they could make them from scratch; maybe the lead time is long because there are no large orders to upgrade Marders, so Rheinmetall is not pumping them out at a high rate.
