Right? I didn’t know either! I must have passed splitgills hundreds of times in my life without noticing. If it wasn’t for @lukelukeluke.bsky.social @geertje-geertsma.bsky.social and @extraunknown.bsky.social I wouldn’t have noticed them and would’ve kept missing how cool these are.
They can be kind of small, these were around 5 cm or so, and from the top they look something like this. It helps to look for small, fuzzy white/beige mushrooms, and to look for anything with an irregular edge. I find that ragged edge most noticeable from a distance.
