If Montreal wants to keep a veteran d-man as a mentor, maybe it should be Savard rather than Matheson. The left side is deep and the right side is thin, with little experience beyond Savvy. #Habs

The issue with that is Savvy is now a 3rd pairing, leaving top-4 duties to Barron (hick) and/or lefties playing on their wrong side. But I do agree that if they get a vet RD, Matheson could become a good trade chip.
That's exactly where I would like to see Savvy, 3rd pairing with some PK responsibility while Reinbacher gets some experience. Even if Mailloux makes the team next season it leaves them one short on RD because it looks like Barron isn't it.
The #Habs could probably afford to slightly overpay Savvy because Mailloux and/or Reinbacher will still be on modest contracts. It would also depend on what Savvy would be willing to sign for.
If I keep Savard and trade Matheson it’s because I’m getting a top 4 RHD dman in return. Otherwise let Matheson play the right side and bridge the gap until the kids are ready. Matheson playing on his off side will be more effective on the 1st two parings than Savard would be.
I like Savard, but realistically, he has slowed down a lot. Extending him might be a mistake unless it is a short contract. Matheson had not been bad on the right side.
The question is with all his talent and speed, and with the other offensive options, can Matheson adapt to play a more shut down role? Cut down on the risky plays on the opposing blue line and maybe he can fit the role the Habs need.
