The creatures were said to be shape-changers that could take the appearance of horses, goats, cats, dogs, and hares, so Clara-Marie has worked some of these features into the concepts, which came out great. However, they were looking a little too crittery, so we tried more humanoid shapes

These were pretty much exactly what I wanted and, rather than decide on a specific design, myself and Clara-Marie agreed they can vary in appearance! We also tried them with clothes — they’re heading Beyond the Woods after all, and will need armour and weapons!

Now we know clothes work (phew), Clara-Marie did some colour studies to give us an idea of what they’ll look like in the final illustrations. Again, instead of deciding on colours, we agreed that they can have varying skin tone and hair colour!

And there we have it - our Púca for Beyond the Woods!
