But first, let's start with the obvious. If you haven't played 'Crimson Skies', you should. There has never been a better arcade flight game. Rarely has a game ever been this peak. It has a permanent place in my top 25.

The next obvious choice is the Xbox semi-sequel, 'High Road to Revenge'. I like it a lot less, it ditched a lot of the charm of the original in pursuit of a larger, younger audience, but it's pretty and it plays okay. Not a masterpiece, but worth your time...

I'm lead to believe that there's solid backwards compatibility for this one on current gen Xbox consoles, where it is available digitally, and you can even play it on PC via Game Pass's streaming feature (it's playable, but you'll need fast, reliable internet).

Just about the only other game that comes close to the gameplay of the original is 'BOMB', a game created as an overt homage to CS, and which captures the high stakes, low altitude barnstorming of the PC game. Plus it really, really looks the part.

I love it to bits, but it's terribly janky. The flight mechanics just aren't as crisp as they should be, and you can feel the devs losing steam as the campaign progresses. Still, it's a fun game at a bargain price so I don't have any qualms recommending people give it a go...

If you prefer rock solid flying over compelling aesthetics, 'Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China', is your best bet. It all just works. Not particularly inspiringly, but it does work. It has the added bonus of playing well with both flight sticks and gamepads, which is rare.
