But let’s go back to the Barrens! One of the first steps designers take is to create a “flow” for how players might traverse the zone. Here are my initial notes. Interestingly, “Griztik’s Camp,” presumably a neutral goblin hub, never happened.

(I should note that I was paired with a junior designer for this zone - he created the neutral Naralex quests and the Mankrik storyline. So I can’t take credit for the quest name “Don’t Stop Bereaving,” among the best of the expansion.) 😅

As I’m working, whenever I think of a good line I write it down. I found these next to my notes. The first and third lines sound like the undead character that became Calder Gray. But the dwarf with the “capper-chino machine” - Welp, I guess he never made it in game.

Speaking of Calder Gray, he was one of my favorite characters in the zone. "These parts - so lovely! Muscle and sinew and fingers and toes… I am SO hungry right now." Horde players help him build an abomination. What’s it like to build those quests?

First I made a list of characters I needed to create and dress. I wrote down the character ID for each one when completed. The little dots represent appearances - There’s only one Warlord Bloodhilt, but four variants of Wildhammer Mercenaries.

For Gray’s quests, I needed to create quest items for your inventory (Extremities! Brains!) The bonesaw was a carried item that allowed you to interact with certain dead bodies. I created a spell to replace them with a pile of wrecked remains.
