I’ve added comments under my post to provide more context about SoR & deaf readers, though not directly in this specific thread. Feel free to check them out… Phonics are not present for *all* skilled readers. This misinformation needs to be cleared up. I am a skilled deaf reader & no phonics in me.
Thanks for that. It’s very interesting. Have you any specific references? Some of what I have read doesn’t exactly tally with what you’ve said. I suppose it emphasises the need for wide reading on a topic… which is hard to do when there’s so much to wade through!
I left references in my response to Michael T. Paff’s comments… they’re a great starting point.
Your initial assertion (most folks react like you) is exactly why SoR policies harm deaf children. 😌 I hope this helps you understand why SoR has been frustrating & counterproductive for Deaf education.
I will take a look. I haven’t taught any deaf children to read, hence limited knowledge. I’m not keen on the narrative of SOR excluding the deaf population. SOR ‘folks’ are often those who have come through teaching WL & BL unaware of the research out there but now strive to do better for ALL.
Gee. I thought this space was different than Twitter. 🤷🏼♀️ I’m ALWAYS open to learning. I don’t know much about the neuroscience of how deaf people read, but when I get a chance, I will delve into it. As I said already, the SOR is about ALL learners, no exclusions.
You thought this place was different from Twitter, so you...
hopped into a stranger's thread to talk over others' lived experience and scientific expertise about something you "don't know much about". Got it.
Came up on my feed, saw some responses that seemed to misrepresent what the SOR is so I jumped in. It’s a discussion, that’s what happens here. If the post was only for deaf people to respond to then maybe that should be stated. Anyway, I’m off to bed. I’m sure I’ll dream of MRIs and eye tracking.
Miss me with the hearing fragility. If I jumped into someone's timeline shouting, "no exceptions" about something I then immediately admitted I didn't know about, I would (rightfully) be course-corrected. Have a good night! - Signed, a multilingual deaf person teaching my deaf kid to read ✌🏼

As a disabled person I’d like you to realize you’re part of the problem.
