Hi, I am a psychologist working with asylum seekers in an NGO. I just wanted to add something I think is important:

1. The first country of the EU you step on is the one in which you have to make the asylum petition. So if you want that country to be Spain you need to fly directly here.

2. Right now is really difficult to get appointments for the interview but it could be a little easier to do it with Cruz Roja, Accem, Cepaim or another NGO that work with refugees because of the ties they have with the asylum system in Spain and they can provide legal assistance in the process.

3. On February the government changed some laws about the asylum seeking process and right now the time you stay in Spain as an asylum seeker doesn't add to the time you need to stay in the country to ask for other permits to stay in the country.

4. Gather of the evidences you can if you were subject to personal persecution because of your gender identity or sexual orientation. It's necessary to prove it for getting a refugee status, not for subsidiary protection tho but the latter depends on how the relationship Spain maintains with the USA

And knowing the relationship Spain keep with the USA I think is very unlikely for Spain to concede subsidiary protection to USA citizens because that would be declaring the USA and unsafe country for it's citizens (which is it) publicly.

You might want to consider a European country that is not at the boarder of the union.
You have to apply where you enter the EU
This means places like Spain, Italy and Greece are having basic too much requests from refugees from the south
Places like Belgium have good trans laws too, research it
