Recently, a really informative thread was made by @bugwizardshloop.bsky.social on insect specimen sellers in general and their questionable ethics and claims. I'd highly recommend checking it out.

However, I want to focus on two specific sellers that seem to be popular online.

For starters,Minibeast is a popular UK based company that sells framed insects and other animals. They pride themselves on ethics and claim to get their specimens from 'farms' and other ethical sources such as naturally dead specimens found by people.

The company states in their ethics section that they get their insects from farms or from people who source them naturally dead. This includes roadkill, stillbirth and birth complications. The company also claims to sell animals that are a by product of farming industries.

I highly question the validity behind those statements. The company sells several species which cannot be/are not farmed such as jewel beetles, weevils, longhorns etc. These beetles are heavily collected from the wild and are sold online a lot.

Among the beetles, there are multiple stag beetle species and goliaths. These once again, are often wild collected and poached in order to fulfill the popular demand for them online. Mass breeding/farming of these beetles is very unlikely unfortunately.
