We only have the capacity we do because of the high prices. Without them Scottish production would be unprofitable, so wouldn't happen
Wind is also very erratic, so we can go from a surplus to a shortfall with no control over it
That doesn't address the times when there is a shortfall. Storage helps, but batteries are expensive and limited.
Hydrogen may work, but there are lots of problems still to be ironed out before it becomes an option
Thar leaves 3 options if Scotland wants to be sure the lights stay on.
Second, fossil fuels. Cheap, reliable, polluting.
Third, nuclear. Reliable, no greenhouse gas. Cheaper than floating offshore, reliable.
