When I read this passage in King's On Writing, it validated how I've always written. What they do as the story develops always surprises me, and I just let them follow their fictional hearts. If I try to nail them down to a structured plot? I get blocked, and my writing slows to a crawl.

Stephen King quote:

“The situation comes first. The characters—always flat and unfeatured, to begin with—come next. Once these things are fixed in my mind, I begin to narrate. I often have an idea of what the outcome may be, but I have never demanded a set of characters that they do things my way.”
