My father was the most loving person, but felt that even if he wanted, he couldn’t send us to college. Many times I cried from frustration; however, I had an extended family who also joined forces to help out. With their help, my parent’s struggles and our perseverance, we reached our goal.

I know my grandmothers worked. I don't know if my great-grandmothers did. I'm in my 60s. My daughter works, and I have as well. They seem to have this idealistic view that grandparents will watch their kids. When exactly did that happen? Don't you know men are more capable than we are?

Full circle. In the early 60’s, white kids were sent to the guidance counselor. I was placed in home eco classes (hate sewing to this day). Bc I practically lived in the library voluntarily reading Balzac, etc, I researched getting a scholarship to nursing school, even tho I wanted to be a librarian

Exactly. It wasn't that long ago. I'm old enough to remember the days when women couldn't own property or get credit. In the 60s, after my father's death, my mother worked as a cashier because it was the only job she could get. We lived in a mobile home on a lot my grandfather owned, I'm assuming

My mom stayed at home until we were older, then did domestic work. My big sister was a file clerk. I just knew I wanted more. Years later, I realized that I might’ve been a lawyer, but never saw any female lawyers, much less black ones. Much later, my grand niece did just that.

I was pushed into classes for secretarial work / bookkeeper, like my mother. I suck at bookkeeping. I was basically told I was stupid because of it. I wanted to be a vet. My mother went to work when I was in grade school because of medical bills for my half-sister.

I had hopes that my 8 year old granddaughter would soar. Last October, she objected to Kamala Harris being nominated for the presidency. “I want to be the first girl president”. Now I fear that she will be forced into following the path that our mothers took. 😢
